Van Gogh, Bigger than Life on the IMAX Screen
* * * * * Colossal color meets Vincent Van Gogh in “Brush with Genius,” now showing on the IMAX screen at the Fernbank Museum.
The IMAX camera follows Van Gogh’s short 9-year career during which he created more than 900 paintings, most during his final two years. A Dutch-born Post-Impressionist, Van Gogh’s tragic life ended in 1890 at age 37.
Van Gogh is widely regarded as one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art. He remains one of the most talked about artists in the world today, his name, self-portraits and paintings appearing on countless posters, calendars and reproductions, as well as many art-related products and artist’s paints. Art books about Van Gogh are global best sellers.
Did Van Gogh ever sell any paintings? His “Red Vineyard” is now believed to be the only piece sold by the artist while he was alive. It sold for sold for 400 Francs (equal to about $1,000 today).
“Brush with Genius,“ filmed at locations from the Netherlands to Arles, Saint-Rémy and Paris, follows in Van Gogh‘s footsteps. The 45-minute odyssey transports us to dizzyingly yellow wheat fields and swirling cobalt skies, to iris flowerbeds and garish night cafes -- the subject matter that drove his compulsive genius.
We found the unique visual journey in this film to be a totally new and appropriate way to eyewitness the expressive originality of Van Gogh’s distinctive techniques. For a glimpse at the amazing cinematography, see the IMAX preview.
“Van Gogh: Brush with Genius” makes for exciting family fun. It shows through December 31 at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, 767 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30307. Tickets for are available online or by calling 404-929-6400.
The large-format IMAX screen is an ideal canvas for Van Gogh, whose paintings for us always seem larger than life anyway.
